Vasile Alecsandri (1821-1890) published the first edition of this work in 1866, as the last part of a series started in 1852, dedicated to the valorization of Romanian popular literary creation. The copy does not include the author's heliogravure portrait. On the inside of the main cover is a holographic dedication from 1872 by General Grigore P. Cantili (1839-1906), one of the commanders of the Romanian troops who fought in the War of Independence, to his nephew George P. Filiti, future general prosecutor of Romania at the end of the 19th century.
