Constantin Stere (1865-1936), a Romanian of Bessarabian origins, was a proponent of the radical socialist ideology and a political refugee in Romania towards the end of the nineteenth century. He was the founder of the Poporanist movement, of which he was the main ideologue, and left the Social Democrat Workers' Party of Romania in 1899, along with other leaders, all becoming part of the National Liberal Party. A proponent of the pro-German movement during the neutrality and the First World War, he suffered after the war for his choice. The present novel is his most significant literary work, published in several editions, which enjoyed great success at the time. Many of the literary characters appearing in the work represent fictionalized versions of personalities of the era, such as: T.T. Flor-Petre P. Carp, Nitză Vasilescu-Take Ionescu, Aurel Crăsneanu-Ion I.C. Brătianu, Arghir-Nicolae Iorga, Carol Petera-Petru Poni, Vasile Credință-Iosif Nădejde, Gheorghe Război Vrînceanu-Constantin Dobrogeanu-Gherea, Artamon Danilov-V.I.Lenin.
