Serban Cantacuzino commissioned and paid for the creation of three masterpieces of Romanian printing, as a gift to the Romanian people: The Gospel in 1682, his first book, The Apostle in 1683 and The Bible in 1688. Noteworthy is the fact that in this edition, the Gospel pericopes, for the first time, begin in liturgical order, namely with Resurrection Sunday. The text is printed in black and red, on two columns; the title page in a framed-portico. The coat of arms with the signs of the Ruling Cantacuzino and the full-page engravings are attributed to the monk Damaschin Gerbest; according to other researchers and the woodcut of the title page would also be his work. The initials are printed in red cinnabar. Copies have been reported with the initials printed in black, a fact that explains a different print run (Dan Râpă-Buicliu).
