The Tribe of Dan is located in the western part of the Ivory Coast, east of Liberia; they are famous for the wide variety of tribal masks, a central element in the cultural life and social organization of the tribe. The costume often includes a mask, a wide palm fibre skirt and a cloth cloak, which completely covers the wearer, hiding the body and in line with the belief that the person in costume thus becomes a forest spirit. The natural fibre stands for the forest, while the mantle represents the society; the mask is a mediator between these two worlds. Masks are the most important art form in Dan culture. They are relatively numerous and every village has several. Even when they are similar the masks have very distinct personalities and roles in the community.
