The city of Qom is located in northwestern Central Iran and is the second largest pilgrimage city after Mashad. In 1220 the Mongol nomads devastated the city and 500 years later Qom was conquered by the Afghans; as a result the hand-knotted rugs appeared in the 1930s. Because this type of rug could not develop its own traditional motifs, they were borrowed from other areas. Over time, however, the motifs became specific to the place of creation. The Ghom carpet is woven from the finest wool and very often with (or only from) silk. An area specific is the fact that, in addition to ivory tones, green variants are also used. Along with Hereke in Turkey, the Ghom is currently the best silk rug manufacture in the world.
