With an effective strategy and the early adoption of firearms, the people of Ashanti created an empire that, during its height between 1680-1896, stretched from central Ghana to present-day Ivory Coast. This African mask is a handmade piece created by the Akan people of Ghana from local Sese wood, decorated with multicoloured recycled glass beads on the nose and brass on the forehead and neck. It represents Queen Yaa Asantewaa who led the Ashanti rebellion against British colonialism in 1901.
