Obverse: head of Hercules covered with lion's hair, facing right Reverse: seated Zeus Aëtophoros facing left, HP monogram in the left side, surrounded by the inscriptions ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ and ΛYΣΙΜΑΧΟY, Θ under the throne, wheat ears in the husk - From Pliniu the Eldest, we learn that the city of Callatis was founded on the site of a Thracian settlement called Cerbatis or Acervetis. The middle of the 4th Century B.C. Kllatis was in full development, turning, like Istria, into an important production centre - Heraclea Pontica was also a city founded by settlers from Megara. In addition to the fortress of Kallatis, apparently nicknamed "the fortress with strong walls", the settlers who left Herakleia established the fortress of Chersones in the Crimea - The Kallatian mint was opened around 330 B.C.
