Obverse: Jesus Christ on the Throne, looking to the front, with Nimb and raised hand, next to the initials of Jesus Christ, IC-XC Reverse: The emperor seen from the front, holding Labarum and being crowned by Mary, on the right, together with the letters MR - QU/ Iw/ DE/SP/ - Twn/P/F/R/G Ioan III Ducas Vatatis or Ioan I of Nicaea (reign from 1222 until November 3, 1254) was the son-in-law of Teodor Lascaris, founder of the dynasty. He continued the efforts of his predecessor and was one of the greatest rulers of the Byzantine history. He succeeded to subdue his opponents: the Emperor of Thessalonica, the Tsar of the Bulgarians (Asan II) and the Latin Empire, whose life was only held together by the disunity of his enemies. Spared in extremis by the Mongol flood, Nicaea took advantage of his neighbours’ weakness. Despite the wars, Ioan III raised the economy of the country and Nicaea experienced a prosperity that the Byzantine Empire had not experienced for a long time.
