Obverse: Greek maritime symbol: eagle on dolphin, IΣTPI legend, everything in quadratum incusum Reverse: two reversed heads of Dioscuri brothers - On the reverse of many Istrian coins are presented two human head, one of them being overturned, probably representing the Dioscuri or perhaps other protective gods of the city's trade. - According to the famous Romanian cultural man, Nicolae Iorga, these symbols, the sea eagle clutching a dolphin, were used on the coins by other Greek cities as well, such as Sinope - another colony of Milet - and Olbia. - Politically, Istria played an important role in the revolt of the Pontic cities against the Macedonian king Lysimach, in the war against Byzantium and in the conflict between Mithridates VI Eupator and the Romans.
