Leon Alexandru Bijeu is born in a family of Central European intellectuals in the late 19th century. In 1899, he enrolled at the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest, where he was admitted first out of a total of 19 competitors and attended the courses of George Demetrescu Mirea, Ipolit Strâmbu and Dimitrie Serafim. He graduates in 1906 under the auspice of the distinction and medal offered by the Bucharest educational establishment. He will study at the same time at the Conservatory singing department, but will focus mainly on painting studies and will not graduate from the Conservatory. In his way to Julian Academy in Paris, he will stop in Munchen or Dresda and will therefore take over European pictorial motifs. Together with professor Jean Paul Laurens and with his colleagues from Paris, Biju will undertake journeys to Morocco and Algeria, journeys that will have a vast influence on his canvases. Passionate about discovering the Oriental space, he will travel in Egypt as well, where, fascinated by the richness of the natural space, will stay for four years. He will become member of the Artistic Youth, where he will exhibit frequently, but he will also be the founder of the Syndicate of Fine Arts, along with other artists of the time such as Adam Balțatu, Paul Molda or Lucian Grigorescu. Leon Biju remains famous in the Romanian history art especially because of his craftsmanship in rendering still lives with flowers. Chrysanthemums, tulips or roses are often in the focus of his works and are presented to viewers in shades of red, white or yellow. In the present work, Biju introduces us to a corner of his workshop where we can see, in the central plane, the clay jug that keeps the brushes - instruments of his artistic manifestation. There are also the recurring elements of fruit and clothing, which support the intimate, familiar setting in which the artist expresses his creativity.
