Ștefan Dumitrescu's work is divided between portraits, landscapes or genre scenes. The artist often captures the village world or the local colour of Dobrogea, portraits of Turks, peasants or workers. In portraits, he relies rather on deciphering the complexity of the inner turmoil of his protagonists, giving them neutral or sometimes meditative expressions. The portrait also allows him to impose himself as a drawer. The sketched characters harmoniously intertwine with the chromatic decisions of the artist. His passion for music is transposed in harmonious chromatic rhythms, with strong accents and obvious contrasts. Through colour, Dimitrescu highlights both shadow and light, and shape and form. He also offers, a particular attention to his characters clothing and he accessories they receive. The concern for the social thematic and the indisputable interest for human psychology are remarked both by the genre scenes and portraits and in the landscape. During his studies in Paris, the essence of Cezanne's creation was to become acclimatized to the canvas of the Romanian painter, whose predilection for rigorous plasticity was indisputable. The artist creates an entire series dedicated to Tatars from Mangalia, Techirghiol or Balchik, seascapes and streets from Dobrogea. Starting from the belief that the artist can learn in any circumstance, Dimitrescu uses travels at home and abroad as vital landmarks in the search for the meaning of his creation. In the compositions with characters, he focused his attention mainly on the Romanian peasant, but his canvases are also rich in the appearances of the Tartars in the Dobrogea area. The oriental disinvolvement from the works of the artist enhances the monumental presence of the protagonists, captured with simple, long calculated gestures. Dimitrescu's painting remains a milestone in the Romanian art economy, strongly rooted in local traditions and customs.
