Considered a follower of Andreescu, Grigorescu or Luchian, the artist embraces the changes and particularities of everyday life and reflects them on his work. His expression force will go beyond any suggestions from the Romanian masters. From the Munich school, the artist gets the theoretical notions, the technical particularities and the appetite for realism, while from the Parisian school he will leave accompanied by the necessary notions to develop light plans and to exploit the chromatic palette. The beginnings of Steriadi's works are related to the large dimension paintings, the illustration of the everyday life scenes and of panoramas of the hustle and bustle of the ports it passes through. The expressiveness of his pictorial style was praised by the critics of the time. He will initiate and promote graphic salons and will excel in this genre as well. The drawer's pencil will melodiously blend with the one of the painter and it has as a result a unitary artistic vision, which combines painting with graphic. The richness of the techniques used in representing reality in his works reveals us the life from the cities and ports, portraits with psychologic nuances, and also some chambers. His artistic activity will combine prolifically with teaching. Between 1924 and 1928, he will activate as teacher at the Academy of Decorative Arts. In the same period, he will make free studies with willing students in his workshop in Kalinderu Museum. Also in 1928, he will become painting teacher at the Fine Art School in the capital. The interwar period, in which the present work falls, confirms artists' predilection for landscapes, interiors or still life. Uncertainty and the fluctuations of daily life during this period led to a decline in artists' interest in composition of a clearly social nature. A few compositions dedicated to interiors will appear in Steriadi's work, most of them representing rooms or corners of his own home. The reminiscence of the social traditional theme is enhanced by painting the decor in rich colours. The rustic atmosphere is accentuated by the illustration of wooden furniture, tapestries, ceramics and paintings. The meticulousness the artist proves in the realisation of the details of the decorative elements reveal the drawer's skill and confidence.
