Coming from an old boyar family leading the Brașov merchants, enjoying considerable fame and financial possibilities, Constantin Lecca left his hometown around the age of majority to continue his studies in Buda. Although, at the time, a pictorial style whose essence was eminently religious was employed, with a decorative role in the places of worship or in the boyar homes, this type of Byzantine art was approached more frugally by the young artist educated abroad. Lecca focused on portraits, clearly demonstrating the influences of the Viennese school. He completed his artistic training in Buda, Vienna, Rome, and Berlin, and it was in Rome that he learned the craft of copiers by reproducing famous paintings. These are evidence of his studies abroad, and Constantin Lecca was among the first Romanian artists to undertake such endeavours. Returning to the country, he opened his own printing house in Craiova, in the vicinity of the central school (having concluded an agreement on funding with the educational unit). Magazines were printed here ("Mozaicul" remains among the best known), various Christian or moral publications, theatre plays or dictionaries. He then took up the drawing and calligraphy department of the Craiova school and was also the first drawing teacher of Theodor Aman or Petre Alexandrescu. The chronicles of the time describe him as an influential painter, who created monumental canvases dedicated to the rulers Michael the Brave, Radu Negru-Basarab, Dragoş Vodă, Dimitrie Cantemir, or Ștefan cel Mare, later exhibited in the schools of Bucharest, to serve as a historical source and to be admired by the pupils of these schools. He used the same skill in tackling historical subjects such as the peace agreement, the battles, or settlements; but he essentially remained a Romantic painter. He established a so-called "triumvirate" at the time, together with the painters Mişu Popp and Barbu Stăncescu. Together they took various orders, from painting the coat of arms of the country on the army flags to painting churches. But Constantin Lecca had a special penchant for revealing human characters in portraits. He captured faces of wealthy nobles, doctors, or priests; but he also painted his wife, children, cousins (Ion and Euphrosina Lecca), or other family members. These portraits are genuine documents of the age, due to the precision of a miniaturist that the artist evinces in the rendering of clothing, hairstyles, lace, and adornments. He practically created a whole gallery of portraits dedicated to the Romanian boyars, but he often also painted himself. He created the thematic cycle of self-portraits – still under the influence of Viennese Romanticism, but in Italy, he sketched a first self-portrait as a youth, which is currently preserved by the Romanian Academy. He paid particular attention to the rendering of the hair, moustache, or beard. With clear waves and undulations, his features emanate grace and elegance. In this portrait ,he captures the delicacy of the female character. The paleness of the skin is highlighted by the cherry colour of the dress embroidered with white lace. The tones chosen by the artist are cold, but harmoniously combined. The blue tablecloth and the grey-toned wall are perfectly consistent with the overall mood of the painting. The protagonist is caught in a calm posture, on the chair; with a hand placed on the folds of her dress, in which we see the cover of a book, and an arm leaning on the table, on which a flower vase also rests. The social status of the character is revealed by the elegant jewellery made of gold, but also by the elegant and precious clothing. Therefore, Constantin Lecca remains a promoter of Romanticism and a poet who created portraits dedicated to the Romanian nobility, who broke away from Byzantine art, assuming the role of a painter of people.
