Recently, the master Stefan Câlția has been creating not only artworks, but an actual universe, in which he invites us to reflect and ponder upon the world. “Sometimes, it’s about the endless Transylvanian landscapes or about the fragile bodies that traverse their air." Other times, we are presented with processions of imaginary beings or a bustling from the heated grass of the hill. The characters and objects in the image seem to have undergone a change in sense, they have been witnesses to an event that the earthly world cannot assimilate, becoming atypical beings themselves. The author assumes a certain ambiguity in the construction of his characters, being both natural and supernatural: they can have a human appearance, but there is something ineffable and mysterious in their existence, which distinguishes them from the human being. The role of the character is critical. The characters concentrate the main meanings of the plastic image, enhancing its fabulist sense. The costumes of the characters recall carnavalesque processions, with an emphasis on the playful and dreamlike character of the scene. There are two iconographic types: the human character and the animal character. In the current work, the monkey not only occupies a central place in the compositional structure, suggesting that it is actually the main actor, but it also lends the title of the work, thus definitively placing semi-human beings in the secondary plan. Encountered in multiple works, among which we mention “Traveler with Tree and Monkey”, “Traveler with Monkey”, “World as Theater”, the monkey is the most similar animal to the human, and due to its intelligence, it has been given respect, but also mistrust. The monkey is a smart, sociable, resourceful in mimicry, but it is also a selfish animal. In China, it symbolizes health, success, and protection but is also considered mischievous. The Monkey in the Chinese zodiac represents fantasy and a deceptive figure, being the basis of the human character. In Japanese, the corresponding word for monkey is similar to “absence of evil”. In the current work, the artist reveals a small “theatre of the world”, a theatre laden with symbols, a universe of life filtered through reason and culture, with characters caught in the interpretation of the role assigned by the Creator. The cultural branches that breathe life into this framework are multiple: the life values of the Transylvanian village, the collective memory of Romanian folk tales.
