Known as an artist of colour, Ion Țuculescu remains a distinguished voice through the way he lays down his thoughts and visions on canvas. Possessing an astonishing expressive force, his creation continues to be remembered as inimitable. Even in an incipient stage, his works grip you, having a certain vibrant rhythm that invites you to explore a vital world for contemporary Romanian art. Țuculescu's creation is so easily recognizable precisely because it finds its artistic roots in the world of popular traditions and spiritual turmoil. The painter proposes a return to the most basic visions specific to the native world. He sought to capture the essence of a civilization and update it, with the aim of experiencing his own inner turmoil. Ion Țuculescu never had a teacher, but with a rigor worthy of a self-taught person, he deepened, in his work, the techniques that he assimilated from the compositions of the great Romanian masters, especially Luchian and Petras, but also the universal ones, mostly Gauguin and Van Gogh. A slightly more limited chapter, in terms of quantity, from the artist's work, is that of the interiors, from the 30s’-40s’ period. This period is the continuation of the still lifes, but with a different spatial unfolding, conducive to the development of his new plastic formulas. Works such as "Interior Scene", "Interior with Two Women", "Interior with Borangic Headscarf" are part of this cycle of works. This pictorial cycle marks his approach to folklore, through the interventions of decorative objects of popular design. Țuculescu reconsiders the traditional vein both in terms of plastic and theoretical, resorting to an assimilation of factors that keep the local specificity alive. In the present work, the place is saturated with recognizable elements belonging to the popular world. It is important to note that there is no spatial delineation between elements, but they overlap through dynamic masses of vibrant colour. The space becomes coagulated, the room being cluttered with objects. A wicker basket rests on the table in the small room, next to it are some ripe apples, which stand out from the rest of the frame by a brighter shade of red. Moreover, we notice the traditional motifs in the background, and the door, which is partially framed, as if leaving room for the viewer to step into the room. The present work can be interpreted as a still life in an interior, being different from the other works dedicated to interiors made by Țuculescu. His painting becomes the embodiment of a story within a frame, where two narratives unfold simultaneously. The two planes intersect and together form a vibrant composition, overflowing with colours and patterns, which only find their place in Țuculescu's paintings.
