The fairytale world that Ștefan Câlția wanted to shape throughout his life derives from a deep interest in man and nature, fairy tales, and ideas. His fantastic world has its own rules, despite its playful disorder, Câlția's works function according to an intrinsic, subconscious order. The artist's works can be interpreted as labyrinthine stories, in which you first get lost, and then decipher the mystical structure. The atmosphere of his images is tense, maintaining the same phantasmagoric tone. In his work, the fairy tale world regains its elasticity, his characters becoming like dandelions under the force of the wind, always in motion. The art of Maestro Câlția rhymes with life, often asked if he likes stories the artist has always answered: "Of course. Even our life is a beautiful story... with dragons... with fairies... with beautiful skies... with storms.". Thus, carnival convoys trickle onto his canvas, along with a multitude of effervescent characters and animals that accompany them on their initiatory journey. Full of compositional details and symbols, this work, entitled "Clown with Roses", fits into the cycle dedicated to the carnival world, which also includes the following works: "Girl with Lemon", "Clown with Crown", "Moon, the Bird and the Clown". The work "Clown with Roses" is entirely representative of the compositional period of the late '90s and early 2000s, through its themes and the representation of the characters. The central point of the work is the character, holding white flowers in his hands. The clown attracts the viewer's attention with his magical costume, but also with his ethereal face, which seems taken from another world. The creature seems to have finished its carnival performance, and now it enjoys the applause of the crowd. The color palette used in this painting is vibrant, abounding in shades of blue, which is Ștefan Câlția's favorite color. The blue seems to invade the work, boundless and opaque. "How can you not paint your house blue? Look at how chicory flower looks in the green grass in the morning. God arranged them in such a way that the white creates a passage between blue and its complementary," says Ștefan Câlția about the color that brings his works to life. Everything intertwines on the canvas like a playful sequence, in which the character sneaks in to reveal a jovial mystery.
