69. Buffaloes at the River [1914]

Tadeusz Ajdukiewicz stands out as a realist painter who prefers focusing on battle scenes, portraits, and landscapes in his artistic creation. We often find many compositions having nature at their core, especially herds of animals captured in the open: horses or buffaloes. With studies conducted in Krakow, Vienna, and Munich, Ajdukiewicz would live for short periods of time in various European capitals and cities where he would undertake various artistic orders, yet immediately after completing his studies, he would return to Poland and work for a while as a farmer. In Vienna, he made portraits for the aristocracy of the time, in Krakow he engaged in the same type of orders for high society, but also with creating genre scenes or military scenes. In 1893 he carried out a commission for the Prince of Wales (future King Edward VII) in London, which would facilitate his integration into the aristocracy in Sofia in 1896. He also worked in Turkey, Saint Petersburg, or Bucharest (1899). This artwork dates from 1914, the year when the painter joined the Polish army during the First World War. The aforementioned period corresponds to the long series devoted to equestrian compositions, with soldiers caught galloping, on horses; or groups of cavalry caught walking, accompanying the animals.
