6. Imperial Icon on wood, "Saint Hierarch Nicholas", Transylvanian school, probably Ruthenian workshop, second half of the 18th century, collection piece

Identification elements of an iconographic and stylistic order: The icon probably formed part of the imperial icons from the iconostasis of a wooden church in the Maramureș area. Saint Hierarch Nicholas is depicted slightly below the middle, wearing over his green sticharion a reddish ochre felon with stylized white flowers, and above, an ochre omophorion with black crosses. He does not wear a miter. With his right hand, he is blessing, and with the left he is holding the closed Gospel. Around his head he wears a halo painted in golden yellow. The background of the icon is painted with reddish ochre at the top and green at the bottom. The face of Saint Nicholas, presented frontally, is painted with ochre, being slightly valued and mostly graphically realised. His clothes are treated in the same way. At the bottom of the icon there is an inscription in Ukrainian, probably a donation. Technical identification elements: The panel of the icon is made of a single wood board, reinforced with two embedded traverses. The profiled frame is added and fixed to the icon with wooden nails. Conclusions: Stylistically, the icon falls within the Maramureș painting of the 18th century. Some particularities, such as the red-ochre background, the initials of the name written with a sigma letter, as well as the inscription on the icon, attest to the influences of the “Carpathian” painting school on the painting from northern Transylvania (A.D.).
