51. Icon on wood, "Saint George killing the dragon", Romanian school, first half of the 19th century

Iconographic and stylistic identification elements: The icon is a festival one and was part of the frieze of an iconostasis, of which nine icons have survived in the collection. The anonymous painter represents the familiar scene: against a blue background, in the foreground is depicted Saint George in a Roman soldier costume, riding a horse reared on two legs. With an embarked movement, suggested by his fluttering red cloak, he pierces the dragon at the horse's feet. The composition is balanced, and the chromatics, dominated by red and blue, is similar to the previous icons, with which it is a series. Technical identification elements: The wooden support of the painting consists of a plank, without a crossbar. Conclusions: The painting of the icon stylistically fits into the religious painting practiced in the first half of the 19th century in local, more conservative workshops, which will gradually be transformed into popular painting (A.D.).
