Adrian Ghenie is a complete artist, who has shaped his own path in the world of fine arts. His artistic struggle is to transpose the immaterial into painting, thus, Ghenie continues to explore daily reality through his own interpretation grids. "I can't imagine that art can be made without loneliness.", Ghenie declared in an interview. The painter proposes to explore loneliness in the era of technology and information in his works. Thus, Adrian Ghenie will undertake endless research to render all aspects of his artistic universe. His first creative period, the end of the '90s and the beginning of the 2000s, is characterized by the acquisition of technical knowledge. Ghenie tries to reconstruct, through an almost self-taught unfolding, like a copist exercise, the works of great artists: Renoir, Rembrandt, and Titian. His first artistic period, which includes the present work, is influenced by classicism. At the same time, the period of the '90s, being marked by political and economic instability, forces the young Ghenie to paint pictures according to the requirements of his close ones, who were primarily interested in landscapes. Thus, the paintings from this period are characterized by natural landscapes, that constituted the nucleus of his initial works. Several works are part of this incipient series like: "View from Cluj", "City Margin", "Orchard", all adding up to the first creative nucleus. The present work falls into this first stage, and is included in the landscape cycle, having its nucleus in a mountain setting. Adrian Ghenie uses for this work a palette of colors atypical to his later compositions. Ghenie uses bright, vibrant colors, such as: blue, brown, shades of green and yellow, blending them on canvas with the precision of a master. Thus, the incipient stage of creation, although it did not include numerous works, recounts the artist's beginning. His first contact with canvas is recorded through the existence of these paintings, forming the basis of an artist who was to continuously develop, always aiming for compositional perfection. (C.M.)
