Cardinal Andrei Bathory (1563-1599), cousin of the Transylvanian prince Sigismund Bathory, ruled Transylvania for a short period in 1599 after his cousin gave up power in defeat to the Ottomans, who disputed with the Habsburgs their supremacy over Transylvania. The cardinal was killed by the Szeklers allied with Mihai Viteazul during the battle of Șelimbăr after the victory of the Wallachian ruler, who thus took revenge for the persecution they had been subjected to by the Hungarians loyal to the cardinal. The engraving was made in 1599 by the engraver Johann Silmacher (?-1611) and was published for the first time in Ortelius" chronology of 1602. The legend "Aus Sibenbu. Rgn, Cardinali Andreas Bathori" can be read in the exergue. The item is in a very good state of preservation. Engraving on copper.
