The doctor Constantin Vlad (1892-1971) got acquainted with the work of the founder of psychoanalysis during the First World War. Student at the Medical Faculty in Vienna, young Vlad was mobilised in the Austro-Hungarian army and sent to the front as a military doctor, like all his fellow students in their final years of study. He received on the front, from a comrade, some studies published by Freud that caught his attention. After 1918 he settled in Bucharest and sought to develop public and specialist interest in psychoanalysis in Romania. His work about Eminescu, an absolute first for the time, caused a huge scandal because all literary critics considered his analysis as an insult to the national poet. This edition, of which the present copy is a part, is a rarity because, following the scandal, many copies were withdrawn from circulation and destroyed. Constantin Vlad did not republish this work and after 1948 psychoanalytical concerns were banned by the communist regime.
