The engraving representing Sigismund Báthory is made by Dominicus Custos after Hans von Aachen between the years 1600-1604, while the two engravings, of his wife and father, ruler in his turn of Transylvania, are made by Johann Friedrich Rosbach, between the years 1721 and 1722. The central piece of the lot, the portrait of Sigismund Báthory represents not only an artistic achievement by Dominicus Custos, but also a work of historical value for the history of the Romanians. The circular inscriptions of this portrait say: "Sigismundus D.G. Transylvaniae. Molda. Walach. Transalpinae. And Sac. Rom. Imp. Princeps. Siculorum Comes: Patrium Regni Hungariae Dominus Aet. Suae. XXVI. A°. vero` XCVI". However, in 1596, Sigismund Báthory is defeated in 1601 by Michael the Brave and the Austrian general George Basta, which will have the effect of removing the principality of Transylvania from Ottoman suzerainty and passing under Habsburg rule.
