Hungarian Prince Gabriel Bethlen ruled the Principality of Transylvania between 1613 and 1629. He rose to fame thanks to his political doctrine, which was reformist and focused on the development of the Principality, but also thanks to the severe measures which aimed at the concentration of power in his own hands. He was a part of the Hungarian aristocracy which took an opposite stance to the attempts of the Habsburg Empire of bringing Transylvania into its sphere of influence. During the 30 Years War, he formed an alliance with the Protestant powers against Catholic Austria. The current item is executed by Swiss engraver Johann Heinrich Lips (1758-1817). Engraving on copper.
