In 1804, in Halle, Austrian historian Johann Christian von Engel (1770-1814) published, in German, in two volumes, "Istoria Moldovei și a Țării Românești" ("The History of Moldavia and Wallachia") as part of a broader project, "Compendiu de istorie generală a lumii" ("Compendium of General Universal History"). The author supported the theory, later on found in other Austro-Hungarian historians, and contradicted by Romanian ones, regarding the birth of the Romanian population on the southern side of the Danube. Besides, his work contains information related to the role of Michael the Brave, which some Romanian historians, such as Damaschin Bojincă or Nicolae Bălcescu would embrace at a later date. At the beginning of the first volume, one can notice the portrait of Voivode Vlad the Impaler, a reproduction of the 1491 German engraving. On the title page counterpart, there is an engraved portrait of Stefan Stratimirović of Kulpin (1757/58-1836), Metropolitan Bishop of Serbian Orthodoxes in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, between 1790 and 1836. The binding is vintage, made of cardboard.
