In the 1930s, Tonitza began to periodically retreat to the Black Sea coast, particularly in Mangalia, where he was drawn to the specific light of Dobrogea, where he created a series of works inspired by the Black Sea area. This period is one of the brightest and most poetic in his career. His compositions are chromatically balanced, with an emphasis on light and atmosphere, vibrant and pleasant strokes. The artist captures the atmosphere and local color by a considerable reduction of the palette to just a few shades arranged on ample surfaces. He will mainly focus on the urban landscape, revealing the pictorial atmosphere through transparent shadows, unusual shades, and unprecedented details of the shapes. The work at hand is part of his travels to the sea and landscapes which he will capture and highlight within other works: "Eternal Calm" (20s), "Balchik at Dawn" (30s) or "Sunset in Mangalia" (20s). The capture of a beach is not accidental. For Tonitza, the sea not only represents a geographic space but a territory of plastic revelation. The intense light, the color of the water provides him with the ideal opportunity to explore color vibration and atmospheric effects. The sea symbolizes, in mythology and culture, a primordial element of life, regeneration, and purity, often representing a mysterious, unknown, and deep space. As a boundless and hard-to-control expanse, it suggests chaos, but also a role of purification and spiritual transformation. The work captures a sunny day on the beach with clear water in changing shades of turquoise and intense blue. The beach is rendered in warm tones contrasting with the blue sea and the figures within the composition. The sand is depicted with broad, vibrant strokes, suggesting its texture and warmth. The beachgoers are not dominating the scene but are naturally incorporated into the landscape, accentuating the contemplative dimension of the work. The strokes are free, fluid, leaving the impression of continuous movement. The work is not just a faithful rendering of a place, but a meditation on the encounter between man and nature. The sea becomes a symbol of infinity and freedom, and the beach, a transitional space between the stable and the fluid, between land and water. In front of the blue expanse and the endless horizon line, the sea becomes for the artist a space for contemplation and inner balance. Through light, volume, and vastness, the artist turns the landscape into a plastic meditation on freedom and time. The sea is not just a landscape study, but a synthesis of his experiences and travels. The scene highlights the ability to transform reality into a poetic vision and to reproduce, through refined plastic means, the deep spirit of the place.
