The "Aeronautical Virtue" medal and order, the first decorations in the world awarded only to pilots and technical and ground personnel, were created in 1931 and 1930, respectively, by King Carol II to reward their merits, in both civilian and military fields. The obverse of the medal shows the bust facing left and viewed from profile of Hermes, the messenger of Olympus in Greek mythology, an allegorical representation of the speed of the planes and of the pilots in the cockpit, while the reverse depicts the coat of arms of the Kingdom, alongside a pair of wings, of a wreath of laurels and the phrase "For Aeronautics", and the year of creation of the medal.
