The copies are elegantly printed on quality paper and richly illustrated, having a special artistic binding well preserved for the publisher. The work is attributed to Jacques Elisee Reclus (b. Sainte-Foy-la-Grande (Gironde). 15.03.1830 - d. Thourou (Belgium). 04.07.1905), one of the most interesting figures of the nineteenth-century French. The son of a Calvinist pastor, Elisee Reclus has a very interesting evolution. In 1858 he was initiated in the Masonic lodge "Les Émules d'Hiram" of the Grand Orient of France, a member of the first Communist International, an anarchist theoretician, close to M.Bakunin, P. Koropkin and Jean Grave and a fighter of the Commune, he managed to be, as much as engaged in the political left, as prolific a publicist. In 1858 he became a member of the Society of Geography and was hired by Hachette to initiate and lead the series of travel guides that the publisher intended to publish, a position that offered him a number of trips in almost all of Western Europe. His first major geography work that was to ensure his fame was "La Terre description des phénomènes de la vie du globe", in two volumes published by Hachette in 1868-1869, then, starting in 1876, at the same publishing house, appeared the 19 volumes of the monumental "Nouvelle géographie universelle: la terre et les homes", which immediately met great success, being translated and published in many countries on all continents. The work, a remarkable scientific and editorial achievement, enjoying a beautiful graphic outfit, is a valuable bibliophile piece. For the Romanian bibliophile space, the first volume, which contains a consistent chapter dedicated to Romania is special, as well as for the third volume which contains, included in the geography of Austro-Hungary, a good chapter reserved for Transylvania.
