Lorenz Friez (ca. 1490 - ca. 1531), an Alsacian physician, cartographer and astrologer, a pioneer of the Renaissance cartography, collaborated with famous people in the domain, such as Martin Waldseemüller, for whom he processed more maps. He drafted a Geography of Ptolemy, which also contained 24 modern maps, 3 of which were processed by himself (1522); the maps had also been used in the issues of 1525 - Strasbourg - (Pirckheimer text), 1535-Lyon, 1541-Lyon, and Vienna. He also drafted Carta Marina navigatoria, a xylography, in 12 boards, according to Waldseemüller (1516), the first wall map with German text. His creations which were preserved are unique works or very rare maps today. A map of Dacia edited after 1500 belonging to one of the famous cartographers of the 15th-16th centuries. They strived to reproduce the notes of Ptolemy in cartographic images, to which personal notes were added, according with the limitations of the information pertaining to the age, with all localization errors.
