Gheorghe Popescu, often known under the name Gică Popescu, is one of the important players that Romanian football has given. His first contact with the world of football was at the University of Craiova, but he played throughout his career at Steaua, Tottenham, Barcelona, Galatasaray (team with which he won the UEFA Cup in 2000), Lecce, Dinamo and Hannover, where he also retired, in 2003. Affectionately nicknamed 'Baciul', Gheorghe Popescu participated with the Romanian national football team in three final tournaments of the World Championships, in 1990, 1994, respectively 1998 and two European Football Championships, 1996 and 2000. He was also the captain of the famous team FC Barcelona, with which he won the Cup Winners' Cup.
