Lucian Grigorescu's work can be decoded through the perspective of three distinct periods. His initial paintings are impressionistic by nature, as influenced by his masters or by other artists he admired: Nicolae Grigorescu, Derain, Cézanne. He is particularly preoccupied with the way he organises his shapes and elements on the canvas and chooses to use a limited colour palette. The second period is dedicated to the depiction of landscapes, especially those in Cassis. He greatly expands his colour palette and, sometimes overparticular with himself, he depicts fragments of nature. The third period of Lucian Gricorescu’s works stands out through renderings of fragments from Bucharest. The way in which the artist illustrates his signature on the canvas also differs in each of the three periods. Initially, it uses red and then brown; green is associated with the middle period; while he continues to use green in his final period, he still chooses to go back to the original red. The work Case la Balcic (Houses in Balchik) is classified in the middle period. The artist’s outward brushstrokes subtly describe a Mediterranean landscape in which the emphasis is dedicated to depicting the light and colours of Balchik. Typical for this particular period, as a sign of artistic value (as he himself defines the signature), Lucian Grigorescu uses shades of green to highlight his work.
