This dramatic pair of bronze candlesticks crafted by renowned Parisian bronzier Victor Paillard exemplifies the inventive spirit and technical virtuosity of the Second Empire decorative arts. Each candlestick is designed as a sculptural narrative: a winding snake winds upwards, its body forming the axis, while at the base, a small, finely detailed mouse appears in a moment of tension - caught in the eternal drama of predator and prey. Victor Paillard (circa 1805-1886) was one of the most famous mid-nineteenth-century sculptors, known for his close association with artists and his ability to translate naturalistic and imaginative forms into refined bronze works. Regular exhibitor at the Universal Expositions, Paillard combined artistic vision with technical precision, often working in collaboration with sculptors and designers to produce luxury objects that attracted a refined clientele.
