Adrian Ghenie captures in his canvases vulnerability, frustration, or desire. He illustrates the subconscious and uses, almost choregraphically, a dark, brutal chromatic. His works capture the figurative, but the artist does not hesitate to resort to the use of the obscure, both by changing the focal point and by representing characters devoid of particular features. The artist incorporates the cinematic in his canvases by using light effects and brushwork play. The beginning of the 2000s will coincide with the adoption of an expressive leitmotif, which he will insert with a distinguished plastic sense throughout a significant series of works. From the static nature of the studio dating back to 2001, where Adrian Ghenie places the open bowl, overloaded with a pile of shells, between the small vessel with a lid and the imposing jug; and up to the shells obsessively strung in works where the palette seems to have passed through a sepia filter, the shell motif will be adapted and reiterated recurrently. The artist now watches over the genesis of a personal mythology from which random seraphic, equestrian or marine elements will emerge. Sometimes, Ghenie will record macabre presences in the form of angels of death, and at other times we will identify the figures of weary riders, carrying the humble weight of their bodies on the exhausted bodies of loyal animals. The gloomy universe invaded by shells will unhesitatingly pour from one work to another, throughout the broader series mentioned above. The arid universe, devoid of vegetation, where the awakening of nature seems to be just a distant dream signals us, in the present work, the problem of non-existence, disconnection from everyday life and penetration into an unexplored realm. We also note a diffuse digression into an ambiguous universe, alien and strange simultaneously, towards the transcendent. Gothic architecture emphasized by the monumental walls organized on the right side of the work amplifies, alongside the empty shells, the value of repetition as a form of accentuation of apprehension.
