PODRIJETLO

early '40s - the work, owned by art collector Constantin Ionașcu, was entering an "official" circuit starting with the first years of the 5th decade of the 20th century, when, under the Antonescu dictatorship, the painting was confiscated, hence becoming state heritage. There is no known information on the cause leading to the art collector's goods being confiscated, but, given the exceptional traits of Antonescu's regime (anti-Semitism, dictatorship, oppression of historical political parties), we can assume the art collector's affiliation to one of the movements against Antonescu; 1961 - For over 15 years, the artwork has been a property of the State Picture Collection and later on, it was placed in the warehouse of the Romanian People's Republic's Art Museum (functional starting with 1948), as it was part of the museum's property until its return to its owner, starting from 1961 (see painting verso, where the painting's index number in the General Administration (G.G. 2316) and its integration in the National Heritage (P.N. 5646) are mentioned. The artwork was returned to its rightful owner via the Romanian People's Republic Criminal Court/Bucharest Office/Chief Prosecutor's Office (see seal on verso); 1961 - late '60s - the artwork is part of the collection of Constantin Ionașcu, who, according to Radu Bogdan, allegedly passed away between 1967 and 1969; after 1970 - the artwork is added to the collection belonging to Titus Popovici, Romanian writer and screenwriter, corresponding member of the Romanian Academy; author of over 35 movie scripts, among which "Moara cu noroc" ("The Mill of Good Luck"), "Pădurea spânzuraților" ("Forest of the Hanged"), "Dacii", "Mihai Viteazul" ("Michael the Brave"), or "Atunci i-am condamnat pe toți la moarte" ("Then I Sentenced Them All to Death").
