"The lamp, the diffuser and the rag ball were the essential elements of my development," declared Mircea Lucescu. In a context marked by austerity and hardship - his father was wounded in the battle of Cotul Donului, and his mother was ill, the child Mircea Lucescu took refuge in listening to football matches. His debut in the national team came on November 2, 1966, in a 4–2 victory against Switzerland, in the qualifiers for the 1968 European Championship. He was a key part of the 1970 World Cup qualifying campaign, became captain, and at the final tournament in Mexico he wore the armband in all three matches. He was the leader of the "Guadalajara Generation". He first wore the armband in a friendly match against England, the world champion at the time, at "Wembley", in January 1969. He played full matches against Brazil and England and played 69 minutes against Czechoslovakia. The image that remained emblematic is the one after the match against Brazil in 1970, when he left the field with Pele's shirt.
