"The Transfiguration", icon on wood, attributed to painter Popa Simion from Pitești, second half of the 18th century, rare collector's item
Opis
The work is an imperial icon and was part of an iconostasis from a church in Transylvania (Hațeg - Hunedoara area) where the painter was active. On a background painted with a blue sky sprinkled with white stars, at the top, and a stylized mountainous landscape, at the bottom of the icon, the central composition depicts Jesus Christ, shown standing, in shining garments, surrounded by a mandorla. He blesses with both hands and holds a text: "I am the Lord and your God." He is flanked by Prophet Elijah and Prophet Moses (with the Tablets of the Law), depicted standing on the peaks of stylized mountains. At the bottom of the composition are the three Apostles who accompanied Jesus to Mount Tabor—Peter, John, and James—who, at the moment of His Transfiguration, were cast to the ground. A double-profiled frame, painted along the edge with red-ochre, is applied to the icon. The composition and style of the icon are characteristic of the painting of Simeon from Pitești, who carried out a prolific activity in the area for about 30 years.
