44. Prince Alexander I Battenberg observes the battle at Dragoman [around 1937]

Dimitar Gyudzhenov is one of the most influential artists in the field of battle painting in Bulgarian art history. The genre played a crucial role in shaping the visual memory and cultural identity of post-Liberation Bulgaria during the first half of the 20th century, and Gyudzhenov’s depictions of Balkan battles were central to this process. The artist himself created his first battle sketches while participating in the First Balkan War (1912–1913), later using them as the basis for imposing compositions such as “General Todorov at Bulair” from 1939. It was precisely during this late-1930s period that Gyudzhenov also produced some of his most iconic historical battle scenes from the Serbo-Bulgarian War, including the work “Prince Alexander I of Battenberg Observing the Battle at Dragoman,” now housed in the Military History Museum in Sofia. The painting depicts the Bulgarian prince surrounded by his officers on an elevation overlooking the battlefield, while on the right side of the canvas soldiers, firing artillery, and smoke rising from exploding shells can be seen in the distance. The monumental composition does not portray a specific historical moment, but rather conveys the heroism, determination, and statesmanlike leadership of the Bulgarian army during the Balkan conflicts of the late 19th century. The two presented lots are preparatory sketches for the large-scale work in the Military History Museum and reveal the creative process through which Gyudzhenov developed the composition. The pencil drawing demonstrates the construction of the principal figures and the determined posture of the bodies. The oil sketch emphasizes the depth, color, spatial organization, and atmosphere of the battlefield. Both works represent an authentic part not only of the history of “Prince Alexander I of Battenberg Observing the Battle at Dragoman,” but also of the development of battle painting as a genre by Dimitar Gyudzhenov during the 1930s.
