The interiors of the passionate Pallady, one of the last "modernists" of the Romanian painting, are an important chapter for both his entire creation and for the Romanian art as a whole, being included in a category of their own, along with the landscapes of Nicolae Grigorescu, Petrașcu’s Venice paintings or Luchian's flowers. What Pallady's painting manages to capture in these works is a true directing of the female model, a subject in itself, reinterpreted in continuous homogenisation with the atmosphere of the mentioned interiors. We are dealing with two very powerful motifs, which find a remarkable translator in Pallady's scrutiny - the woman and the interior - as a reflection of the urban. Probably influenced by those years in which Symbolism co-ordinated his entire stylistic vision, Pallady was able to give his interiors a distinctive mark, infusing the atmosphere with a narrative, always expressive tone. Pallady's models, his friends, lovers or mere professional models, are the ones who control these visual instances, and their appearance is always shrouded by familiarity. The comfort of the sofa or chair, the directing of the props, the scenography behind screens or the corners chosen by Pallady create a lyrical atmosphere in his paintings, coming not from the painter, but from the character. Pallady always seems distant and incorruptible to feelings, but his characters live precisely in the realm of feelings and deeply intimate sensations. Pallady's intimate world, however, does not exist only through his intimate experiences, and his pictorial features bear witness to that: harsh brushstrokes, dull colours, lacking chromatic exuberance, or inexact drawings create interiors that show an advanced creation of a realistic artist.
