226. After the Rain in Băneasa [1902-1904]

The main pictural motifs captured by Ștefan Luchian appeared in his imagination after 1900. What is paradoxical is that at the end of 1901 the artist became partially paralysed following a spinal condition, but he continued to work, creating his most perfect works in the following years. His landscapes clearly show his commitment to life, with the joyful rhythms created with his wide touches and the contrasts between bright colours and delicate shades. Luchian is a painter of summer nature, of warm light and of the celebration of the vegetal life, most of his landscapes being lyrical evocations of the universe's life-giving rhythms and of the joy of being alive. The years 1908 and 1909 mark a climax in the landscapedimension of his work, the impressions of the summer months when he painted in Brebu and Moinești following him for a long time. His stay at Brebu was beneficial to Luchian, helping him to regain his powers and giving him a sense of achievement in his creation, as evidenced by a letter in which he told of his life there. In Brebu he worked in pastel and coloured crayons, techniques that allowed him to translate directly and accurately the effects of light and the changes in the plants' colours under its action. The velvety shades of pastel were suited to his sensitivity, like the dust on the wings of butterflies. In his dialogue with nature, he always wondered about the views that attracted him and what was characteristic of them that mirrored him. Painted in a quick technique, namely watercolor, this landscape presents one of Luchian's study stays at the beginning of the 20th century. The painter captures a typical view for impressionists, attracted by the light effect specific to a particular moment - in this case, after the rain. There is also a version in oil, which highlights the importance that this motif had in Luchian's landscape body of work. "After the Rain in Băneasa" has an interesting documentary trail and is mentioned for the first time in the review dedicated by Leu Bachelin (the Royal House librarian) in 1914, following the Luchian-Dărăscu exhibition. Opera este clasată în categoria Tezaur a Patrimoniului Național Cultural Mobil, prin ordinul ministrului culturii nr. 2019 din 19.01.2007. Ofertată statului român în cadrul procedurii de exercitare a dreptului de preempțiune prin notificarea, conform adresei 3665/31 octombrie 2017, aferent prezentei vânzări prin licitație.
