The first decade of the 20th century marked the beginning of an extraordinary career for Eustațiu Stoenescu. As early as 1900, he was in Paris where, living in the house of the Titulescu family, he became a good friend of the future great diplomat. It was then, at the age of 15, that he entered the workshop of Jean-Paul Laurens, who was his mentor and friend for 11 years. It was also during this period that the young painter was accepted at the National School of Fine Arts (1903-1911) and he made his debut at the Official French Salon in 1905, which he would participate in for 30 years. In 1909, Stoenescu worked in Romania, in Craiova, and in Paris, where he really lived, and this image seems to have been painted there. The characters and the entire scene remind of a slum, but what betrays its Parisian paternity is the poster on the fence in the left side of the painting, where one can note the name of Georges Clemenceau, prime minister of France in 1909.
