Empress Maria Theresa (1717–1780), one of the most remarkable figures of the Habsburg dynasty, had a major influence on Transylvania during her reign (1740–1780), contributing to the modernization of the administration, strengthening imperial authority and introducing social, economic, and educational reforms.
Politically, Maria Theresa sought to consolidate central control over Transylvania, which was an autonomous principality under Habsburg suzerainty. She imposed a more efficient administration and strengthened Vienna's role in the principality's internal decisions, gradually limiting the privileges of the local nobility.
Socially, the Empress paid particular attention to the serf peasants, introducing measures to improve their situation in the face of nobility abuses. Although she did not abolish serfdom, she issued protection patents that regulated the obligations of the serfs and aimed to reduce their exploitation, which was an important step towards later, more radical reforms.
Economically, Maria Theresa supported the development of mines, crafts and agriculture. She promoted the colonization of the region with German populations (Swabians), contributing to the ethnic diversity of Transylvania and the development of new settlements and economic centres.
In the field of education, she initiated significant reforms, encouraging mother-tongue education for different ethnic groups, supporting the Transylvanian School and the development of a network of elementary schools, particularly through the reform of 1774. Additionally, she was the first Habsburg sovereign to pay attention to the United Romanian Clergy (Greek-Catholic), providing them with support and recognition, which allowed the consolidation of a Romanian cultural elite in Transylvania.
