31. The Right Hand of the Pantocrator

Sorin Dumitrescu is recognized in the Romanian contemporary art space due to the compositional fusion between modern aesthetics and Byzantine iconographic art. He is the founder of the "9+1" group, which he established as a strong reaction to the communist regime and the way it related to the artistic manifestations that did not respect socialist doctrine. In the context of the 70s-80s, the artist dedicated himself to "reviving" Byzantine stylistics. Sorin Dumitrescu considered Byzantine art as "the peak of human art", and it became the axis of the status of the sacred image. During the 80s - 90s, he dedicated a whole cycle of works to religious themes inspired by places of worship and biblical figures, which include works such as "Archangel Michael", "The Savior", "Holy Place". Thus, "The Right Hand of the Pantocrator" is a renewal of religious painting. The gesture, which is also the core of the work, conveys the grace and blessing of the Pantocrator. Sorin Dumitrescu tried to mentally rebuild the Byzantine icon, without losing its deeply personal character.
