After a long series of journeys throughout Europe, in 1919 the artist will stop in Dobrogea. He discovers Balchik and develops a real passion for its colour. He paints genre scenes where he is focused on rendering groups of people, streets, inns or slums. At the personal exhibition organized in 1924, he presents several works that start from the Black Sea, with the rocks, red hills or the Tatar houses of the people. Dărăscu will manage to borrow from his solar spirit, through the vibration of the tones and the rigor of the technique that breaks beyond the dusty roads of Dobrogea and Balchik. He paints in plein air, often in urban or maritime areas, capturing the fleeting effects of light and the daily life of people, where a few examples in this sense are: "Houses in Balchik", "Family of Turks in Dobrogea" or "The Fountain in Balchik". In many of his works, urban architecture, tall buildings and village bustle predominate. The present work is made during the years 1923 and 1924, capturing the specific Dobrogean architecture, in which the buildings chain successively and open the way to the city, next to the village's well. Dărăscu thus emphasizes on capturing a moment from the local life of ordinary people, who are caught at the village well, appearing here as a necessary element of life, but which can also be a meeting and socializing place among them.
