Gheorghe Petraşcu focused his work on a range of themes, from landscapes, still lifes, and interior scenes revealing his workshop, to endless floral paintings and portraits dedicated to Lucreția, his wife, who often served as his model. With a predilection for landscape, the artist initially approached this topic, which he also dedicated much of his creation. He painted everywhere in the country, in many regions, also in Dobrogea, in Sulina to Balchik, but also in localities on the Danube, such as Tulcea and Silistra. These are added to the urban landscapes from France, where he paints the churches or small streets of Vitré, Senlis or Morlaix, those from Spain, from Toledo, where he will discover impressive architectural remains or Italy which will offer him a special rich theme. Admirable in the posture of the draftsman, like Luchian, Petraşcu works directly from color, attributing a particular consistency to the pictorial matter, as well as the mark of his personal style. Regarding the present work, which we can frame in the 1930s when he began to make several trips to the Black Sea, Balchik or Venice, where in these, he will focus more on the landscapes from the seashore. Thus, after the style he develops in the work, we can notice that this subject of his work will often be retaken in the period of the 1930s-1940s, due to his passion for this subject, and the female character depicted in long dress, shawl and sun hat probably embodies Lucreția, his wife, who often served as his model in the artist's works. The work's perspective is slightly ascending, which gives monumentality to the character whose silhouette is outlined almost up to the hips on the beach sand and the upper part of her body. He manages to convey, through his specific strokes, and also the moral characterization of the character, given its proximity. Petraşcu presents us here in the hypostasis of the colorist who saturates the pictorial surfaces and lays down the palette knife. The effervescent and fresh brushwork here emphasizes the nuances of ochre, brown, blue, and white that make up the coastline. The paste arranged in consistent layers visually amplifies the marine landscape by the viewer, and the sea becomes a constant and bigger part of his creation. But not only the sea, but the journey itself contributes to the development of his imagination and his artistic repertoire which once again demonstrates the vocation, expressive force and creativity of his work.
