31. Roses [1967]

Still life is a genre constantly addressed throughout the history of art, both in training schools and in studio practice. Often used as an exercise in composition, volume study or chromatic exploration, it offers artists the opportunity to refine their technique and means of expression. With a vigorous and determined artistic personality, Rudolf Schweitzer-Cumpăna frequently returns to this subject, not out of routine, but from a desire for introspection and reflection. Moreover, as Petre Oprea recalls, the artist gives his objects an almost mystical charge, "an aspect of inexplicable unrest and visual tumult difficult to retain within the limited frame of the canvases". The mysticism referred to by the critic is not, however, one depicted through religious scenes. His subjects are simple and everyday. What we encounter is an acceptance of fate and the human condition, devoid of rebellion or protest. His paintings, although they have a particular emotional intensity, maintain a modest, sincere and balanced attitude. Cumpăna seems concerned about not just articulating the visible form of things, but also the tranquility, or perhaps the silent unrest, surrounding them. A recurring subject in his still life is that of the roses. Numerous works from various stages of his career illustrate this theme, suggesting a constant concern and a desire for variation and deepening. A comparison with a work completed in 1962 highlights how differently he approaches the same motif. In that painting, the composition is vertical, and the bouquet is centrally placed, almost monumental, with an aura of sacredness. The background is dark, the table barely visible, and the roses, the only bright areas, seem to emit their own light. The image has a concentrated, almost meditative gravity. In contrast, the work analyzed here proposes a horizontal layout, with an open, airy composition. The table is heavily lit, as is the vase with roses, and its slight oblique tilt adds a subtle tension to the frame. The visual effect is amplified by the clear alternation between bright and dark areas, but also by the slightly eccentric positioning of the bouquet, which breaks the symmetry and dynamizes the ensemble.
