Corneliu Baba's art is centered on observing and capturing people, it is rhythmically dictated by countless motifs and themes, some reiterated, others becoming true obsessions. From the dramatic theme of peasants to obsessions of terror or mad kings along with the harlequin, but also his other preferred themes that include Venetian landscapes where he manages to capture the melancholic but vibrant image of the architecture of palaces and buildings in Venice. Alongside these, another recurrent theme is that of peasants and their activities, where he tried to approach peasants in different situations, because for Baba the subjects with peasants play an important role, it is the ancestral connection between man and the land he treads on. The connection with the land gives them harshness and wisdom, these characters are not joyful, nor sad, they are serious and dignified, they have no gestures or grimaces, and some examples in this regard are: "Venice", "Earth", "Venetian Landscape," "Harlequin 1978" and "Fear 1978". Baba's harlequins are not acrobats and jovial. Baba retains the recognizable "joyful" attributes of the "Harlequin" - the obligatory tricorn and the brightly colored checkered costume. In art, the theme "Mad King" is that of the solitude of power, loneliness, relief and disappointments that it brings. Usually, in the case of Corneliu Baba's works, the theme is related to Shakespeare and King Lear, and an example in this regard is: "Mad King 1981". As for the given work, which can be framed in the period of the 1980s when the artist began to do such works, where the focus of interest is on the couple, and here one can observe the same idea of outlining and representing the scene in a few colors, where black dominates the entire composition. The work focuses on capturing the two characters, the couple. On the left of the composition is the woman wearing a red blouse with a dark brown skirt and white headscarf on her head and who stands with her hands together, standing and looking towards the viewer. On the left, seated in a red chair, is the man who is elegantly dressed in a black suit, with a beard and mustache and looking to the left of the composition. A few examples in this regard are: "Genre Scene (1987)", "Dinner", "Double Portrait" or "At the Dinner Table". The work seems to have accents and elements from the style of the painter Rembrandt because Baba was attracted to his works and tried as much as possible to transpose into his own works the style of Rembrandt. This art of the play of light or chiaroscuro inspired by Rembrandt is predominant and can also be observed in the case of the present work, but also in other paintings that present the portraits of other personalities such as: "Lucia Sturdza-Bulandra", "George Enescu" or "Tudor Arghezi". In his portraits, another characteristic of Baba is the special attention paid to hands, as a key element in characterizing human personality, just like Rembrandt and the great portraitists from the Dutch school, because Baba prepared his portraits, in the footsteps of his master Rembrandt, through a huge number of sketches of hands or eyes wishing to capture as well as possible his style of execution.
