Among the Romanian Impressionists, Samuel Mützner stands out with his personal dedication to conquering light and colour. Working only outdoors, wishing to constantly capture the effects of light on colour, Mützner proved a real adhesion to the lessons of the French Impressionists. The evolution of Impressionism in Romanian painting is marked by the creations of some Romanian artists who have proven a determined adhesion to the precepts of the movement and an assimilation of Neo-Impressionist theories. Thus, the beginning of the 20th century marks the debut of Jean Al. Steriadi, Nicolae Dărăscu, Samuel Mützner, and later that of Lucian Grigorescu. Building on some favourite themes, Mützner seems to approach landscape in all its versions, telling of his adhesion to the most famous movement of world painting. From marine landscapes to the study trip and the Giverny stay, Mützner tried to always re-interpret the figurative starting with light and perspective, thus inaugurating absolutely unique themes in Romanian painting (Japan, South America, or the Mediterranean Archipelago). Although most of the time when referring to Mützner's landscape we relate to the famous cycles of North Africa, France or interwar Balchik, the painter often approached urban landscapes as well, a special category in the Impressionist visual "cult". Thus, from New York nights (painted by Mützner in 1916), to the streets of Tokyo or Peking, or scenes from Bucharest, we discover a well-defined theme that is equally important in Samuel Mützner's 50-year creation. "Calea Victoriei", painted in 1944, becomes even more interesting as we see the hustle and bustle of a city in full World War, an urban bustle sometimes indifferent to the bombings that shook Bucharest starting with April 1944.
