160. The Artist's Sister (Ida Verona) [1885-1887]

The portraits dedicated to his family (his mother, Countess Amalia di Lucovich; or his nephew, Paul Verona; or even his sister, Ida Verona), reveal the care and dedication that the artist manifests towards them. A descendant of noble rank, Ida Verona will demonstrate an artistic vocation from early on that undoubtedly mark the family with Dalmatian roots. Her talent, however, will be revealed through the pen, so that the young woman will emerge as a writer, being the author of important volumes of poetry and drama. She will publish in both Romanian and French; and her studies will be developed within the Notre Dame de Sion boarding school in the neighboring city to the one she was born in, where she perfects her French speech. Ida Verona will be a recurring name in Romanian and French literary magazines, but will consolidate her status through poetry volumes "Quelques fleurs poetiques" and "Mimosas" (the manuscript of the latter is found in the collection of the National Library of France) published in Braila (1882), respectively Paris (1886). Her theatrical debut takes place during World War I when she publishes dramatic texts such as "Domnitz", "Fleurs de sang", "Aecathe" or "Jeanne d'Arc". She will undoubtedly use her voice to make known the feminist cause, even bringing criticisms on the "treatment, position, and role of upper bourgeois women in conservative society of her time". She corresponded with significant writers like Anatole France or Paul Bourget, but, unfortunately, her work has been forgotten. One of the particular marks of her style was her signature – she did not sign her name, but rather drew a butterfly, to which she added spatio-temporal details relevant to her readers. An heiress along the maternal line of the Thebaide villa in Perast, she will settle there alongside her sister, Marie, where she will remain until the end of her life.
