Stefan Popescu would start taking specialized courses only in 1893, when he left for Munich to enroll at the Academy of Arts, where he would study drawing under Nikolaos Gyzis' guidance. In his spare time, he makes copies of the great masterpieces displayed in the Old Pinacoteca, which he showcases in the windows of various bookstores. He will later join the painting courses of the academy in Bavaria's capital and benefitted from scholarships from Romanian patrons. At the end of his studies, he will join the exhibition movements from abroad, but also from his home country, and in 1904 he opens a personal exhibition at the Bernheim Jeune & Fils gallery in Paris. From 1914 he definitively settled in his home country and adopted the recurring pictorial motif especially the southeast of the country and the Balchik area much loved by artists of the time. He will now exhibit alongside artists such as Jean Al. Steriadi, Gheorghe Petrașcu or Cecilia Cuțescu Storck. Also remarkable are the still lifes, where the artist focuses on bouquets of flowers. Carnations, geraniums, tulips or chrysanthemums will follow each other in a demonstrative sequence of his creative power, either enjoying the front row that ensures their individual affirmation, or being placed in a wider frame, with elegant props.
