Encouraged by his teacher Erwin Oehme, who helped him discover the beauty of drawing and painting, the artist set off for Paris in 1889. Once here, he entered Aman Jean's studio in the Avenue de Saxe, where he remained for two years before being admitted to the School of Fine Arts in 1891. At the School of Fine Arts he had the Symbolist Gustave Moreau as a teacher, in whose studio he made very close friends with his easel neighbours Matisse, Rouault, Manguin, Evenopoel, Camoin, Guérin, Lehman, Desvallieres, Martel, Milcendreau and others. He and Matisse would form a close friendship, producing portraits of each other and often corresponding on art. From 1916 onwards, the artist's life was concentrated in Paris, returning to Bucharest only to organize his exhibitions. Returning to his studio at 12 Place Dauphine, in a house "dating back centuries", the artist remained there until April 10, 1940, when he returned home for good. Surrounded by his paintings, his beloved objects collected with passion and skill, his models, the artist will go through a prolific creative phase. With a foreign theme, the new subject of his creation will become Paris. The themes covered during the Paris period will be landscape, nudes, still life, flowers and studies. Year after year he will participate in the official Salon, in the Romanian collective events within the groups "Arta română" ("Romanian Art") and "Tinerimea artistică" ("Artistic Youth"), also organizing solo exhibitions in the country and abroad.
